Sony CEO Says PS6 Release Date Is Still Undecided as Hardware Pressures Continue

Sony still isn't ready to put a date on the PlayStation 6, with the company's leadership maintaining that the timing of its next-generation console remains undecided as component costs and supply pressures complicate the transition beyond PS5.
The comments add further weight to the growing uncertainty surrounding the PS6 release date, particularly as demand from AI data centres continues to put pressure on the memory and semiconductor markets.
For PlayStation fans hoping for a traditional seven-year console cycle and a 2027 launch, Sony's cautious position suggests nothing should be taken for granted yet.
Sony Still Hasn't Committed to a PS6 Launch Date
Sony President and CEO Hiroki Totoki has previously confirmed that the company has not decided exactly when its next console will launch or what it will cost.
That position remains particularly significant as the industry moves closer to the period previously associated with a potential PS6 launch.
According to GamesRadar, shortages and increased demand for components from the rapidly expanding AI industry are among the factors making next-generation hardware planning more difficult.
We previously covered Sony's comments and the memory supply situation in our report on Sony's undecided PS6 release date and price.
Our continuously updated PS6 release date guide also tracks the competing reports surrounding Sony's potential launch window.
Does This Make a 2028 PS6 More Likely?
A 2027 release has long made sense based purely on PlayStation history.
The PS3 arrived in 2006, the PS4 followed in 2013 and the PS5 launched in 2020. Following the same seven-year pattern would put the PlayStation 6 in 2027.
However, the current hardware market is very different.
Sony has to balance the cost of producing a sufficiently powerful next-generation console against the price consumers would realistically be willing to pay.
That has led to increasing speculation that 2028 could become a more realistic PS6 launch window if Sony decides there is little benefit in forcing the console onto the market in 2027.
There is still disagreement among industry sources. Hardware insider Moore's Law Is Dead has maintained that the console could remain on track for 2027. We covered those claims in our report on the PS6's rumoured 2027 launch and Orion hardware.
Until Sony announces the console itself, neither 2027 nor 2028 should be treated as confirmed.
PS6 Price Could Be Just as Important
The release date isn't Sony's only problem.
Memory, storage and semiconductor costs could have a substantial impact on the eventual retail price of the PlayStation 6.
A console can offer extraordinary performance, but Sony still has to make it affordable enough to attract tens of millions of buyers.
Our detailed PS6 price analysis currently puts the most realistic estimates around $599–$799, although considerably higher figures have been discussed under more extreme component-cost scenarios.
The wider console market is already showing signs of pressure. S&P Global Market Intelligence Kagan has forecast that console shipments could decline significantly during 2026, with high component prices among the pressures affecting hardware manufacturers.
That gives Sony another reason to avoid rushing its next console.
Sony Can Afford to Keep PS5 Around
There's another factor working in Sony's favour: the PS5 isn't finished.
Major games are still being developed for the platform, and Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on current-generation consoles.
That could potentially extend the commercial life of the PS5 and PS5 Pro.
We've previously examined what this could mean for GTA 6 and an eventual PS6 version, particularly if Sony's next console arrives after Rockstar's game has already established a huge PS5 audience.
Sony therefore doesn't necessarily need to follow the seven-year pattern simply because previous PlayStation generations did.
Waiting another year could potentially allow component availability to improve, give developers additional time with next-generation hardware and make it easier for Sony to launch PS6 at an acceptable price.
What About the PS6 Hardware?
Leaks continue to suggest that Sony is planning a substantial generational upgrade.
Rumours have repeatedly connected PS6 with future AMD CPU and GPU technology, significantly improved ray tracing and increasingly important machine-learning hardware.
Our complete PS6 specifications guide tracks the most credible hardware rumours and separates confirmed Sony developments from unverified leaks.
Sony and AMD's work on technologies associated with Project Amethyst also provides clues about the direction future PlayStation hardware could take, particularly around neural rendering and machine-learning-assisted graphics.
However, specifications remain subject to change until Sony formally reveals the console.
When Will Sony Actually Announce PS6?
This is now arguably the bigger question.
If PS6 launches in late 2027, Sony would need to begin revealing considerably more about the hardware relatively soon.
If 2028 is the real target, the company has far more breathing room.
Sony hasn't formally announced the PlayStation 6, meaning virtually every specific specification, price and launch date currently circulating should still be considered provisional.
The safest conclusion for now is simple:
PS6 is coming, but Sony isn't committing to when.
Component availability, manufacturing costs and the continuing strength of PS5 could ultimately determine whether the next PlayStation arrives in 2027, 2028 or potentially even later.
For now, our Is the PS6 Coming Soon? tracker contains the latest confirmed information as Sony's plans develop.
