Marvel Tōkon Open Beta Confirms Blade and 15-Fighter Roster

Confirmed: Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is opening its doors to every interested player next week, and Blade is officially part of the playable line-up. PlayStation Blog has published the full plan for the 72-hour open beta, which begins on July 24 across PS5, Steam and the Epic Games Store. The update matters because it turns a previously announced test into a substantial public dress rehearsal for one of PlayStation’s biggest competitive releases of 2026, just under two weeks before the full game arrives.
The free test will feature 15 of the game’s 20 launch fighters, six stages, online casual and ranked matchmaking, local versus, CPU battles, a tutorial, training options and the first three chapters of its Episode Mode. It is considerably broader than a bare network test: players will be able to assess the rhythm of Arc System Works’ 4v4 format, experiment with team combinations and see how the game presents its wider Marvel world outside competitive matches.
A Proper Open Beta, Not Just a Server Check
The open beta starts at 8:00am BST on Friday, July 24, and closes at 7:59am BST on Monday, July 27. That translates to a full 72-hour window, despite the event being framed around July 24 to July 26 in Pacific Time. No registration is required, and pre-downloads begin two hours before the servers open. PS Plus is not needed for the beta, although an internet connection and a PlayStation account are required on both console and PC.
That friction-free access is important for a fighting game built around a new format. A 4v4 fighter can look spectacular in a trailer, but its real strengths live in communication, readable team roles and the confidence players gain when switching from familiar heroes to less obvious partners. By opening the test on Steam and Epic alongside PS5, Sony, Marvel Games and Arc System Works are giving the community a much larger chance to test those fundamentals before launch.
Blade Gives the Beta Its Biggest New Draw
Blade is the headline addition because this is his first playable appearance in Marvel Tōkon. He joins Ghost Rider in the Samurai Outriders group, while the rest of the beta covers sizeable slices of the Fighting Avengers, Unbreakable X-Men, Amazing Guardians and Knights of Doom teams. Captain America, Iron Man, Black Panther, Storm, Magik, Wolverine, Danger, Spider-Man, Ms. Marvel, Star-Lord, Peni Parker, Doctor Doom and Magneto complete the confirmed 15-character selection.
The line-up is a smart snapshot of the game’s approach to Marvel. It balances instantly recognisable leads with characters such as Danger and Peni Parker, giving players reasons to explore beyond the usual superhero-fighter comfort picks. Six locations will also be playable: Marvel’s New York in day and night variants, Savage Land, X-Mansion, Knowhere and Wakanda. That mix should make this a useful test of stage flow as well as character balance, particularly in a game where team-based momentum is central.
Episode Mode and Training Could Broaden the Audience
The beta’s most encouraging inclusion may be its non-competitive material. Start Up Battle is designed to teach the basics of 4v4 combat before players enter a trial match, while Training Mode offers adjustable scenarios and dummy settings. The test also includes three opening chapters of the Amazing Guardians Episode Mode, in which Spider-Man starts gathering allies to confront an incoming threat. For players who love Marvel but are intimidated by technical fighters, that is a far more welcoming first step than being sent straight into ranked play.
It also suggests Arc System Works and PlayStation understand the launch challenge. Fighting games need committed players, but they also need a steady stream of newcomers who can learn without feeling outclassed on day one. A social lobby, casual matchmaking, local versus and accessible teaching tools all work towards that goal. PlayStation says the game has been refined after community feedback from last year’s closed betas, so this wider test will be the clearest public measure yet of whether those adjustments improve the on-ramp.
What This Means for PS6
Marvel Tōkon is not a PS6 announcement, and nothing in this beta changes what is officially known about PlayStation’s next console. Its relevance is strategic instead. Sony is launching this PlayStation Studios project simultaneously on PS5 and PC, with confirmed cross-play between those versions, while still positioning the console version as a premium first-party experience. For any eventual PS6 generation, that points to a player-base-first approach for serviceable competitive games: reduce platform barriers, fill matchmaking pools and let the hardware ecosystem benefit from the game’s visibility.
The Countdown to August 6
The open beta concludes less than ten days before Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls launches on August 6, 2026 for PS5 and PC. PlayStation’s store listing confirms the game is a 4v4 tag fighter with 20 launch characters, cross-play, an online lobby supporting up to 64 players, and post-launch characters and a stage included through the Year 1 Character and Stage Pass in certain editions. That makes the coming weekend the pivotal hands-on moment: players will finally be able to judge Blade, the expanded roster and the game’s wider mode package for themselves.
